John Raymond Eisel, Jr., Current Director of Operations & Retired Fire Chief With great regret and heavy hearts, Violet Township announces the passing of Director of Operations and Retired Fire Chief John Raymond Eisel, Jr. A veteran of the fire service for more than 32 years, John died
suddenly surrounded by his family in Monticello, Kentucky on Friday, July 5, 2019.

John entered the fire service as a volunteer with the Madison Township Fire Department. He then became full time with Perry Township, and ultimately became a Volunteer with the Violet Township Fire Department in 1985. He was reclassified to full time in 1989; promoted to Lieutenant in 1996; promoted to assistant Chief in 2001, and finally became the Fire Chief in 2008 until his retirement in 2014. Upon his retirement, John accepted the Director of Operations position for the Township.

John was a lifelong resident of the greater Canal Winchester and Violet Township area. He was a graduate of Canal Winchester High School. John was also a member of Violet Baptist Church and Charter President of IAFF Local 3558. He volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, was OAPFF Legislative Director, and served on the board of directors for many organizations including the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission; Safety, Health and Survival Section for the IAFC; the Pickerington Food Pantry; and the American Red Cross. John was a member of the Executive Committee for the Coalition of Large Ohio Urban Townships (CLOUT) and had worked at Medflight. John was also a graduate of the Ohio Fire Executive Program.

Retired Chief John Eisel is survived by John is survived by his loving wife, Lori; daughter, Kaylie (fiancé, Dylan MacFarlane) Eisel; step-sons, Hunter Embrey, Peyton Embrey, Brayden Embrey, Jake Embrey; mother, Rita (John) Goings; sisters, Christine (Michael) Betts; Jana (Michael) Newman,  Susie (Doc) Metzger; step-mother, Linda Eisel; parents-in-law, Bill and Sue Clark; brother-in-law, Brandon (Amanda) Clark; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and countless dear friends. John lived his daily life to its fullest and was always high on life. He was one of the happiest and most sincere individuals who brought joy to many on a routine basis.

John was a father, a son, a brother, a mentor and a leader. His passing leaves a very large void to fill. Those who wish may donate to Box 15, or Firefighter Cancer Support, in John’s memory.

With John’s death, he was able to continue giving the gift of life through organ donation. He always said “Leave it better than you found it” and the world is definitely a better place because of John.

Friends may visit 2 p.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 550 Hill Road North, Pickerington, Ohio 43147. A funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 12 at Grace Fellowship, 1449 Refugee Rd, Pickerington, OH 43147.
